Plant nomenclature and taxonomy
Swedish biologist Linnaeus used a new binomial system which was adopted. In this system the first name of the plant is written starting with a capital letter which represent genus of the plant, while the second name is written starting with small letter represent species of the plant.
In pharmacognosy and in research publication, botanical names are followed by the name of person such as Linnaeus and Sole, which refers to the name of biologist or botanist who first describe the species or variety of the plant.
e.g. botanical name of peppermint is:
Mentha piperita Linnaeus
Mentha piperita L.
Sole was another biologist describe that there are two variety of peppermint:
Mentha piperita Linnaeus variety officinalis Sole (white peppermint).
Mentha piperita Linnaeus variety vulgaria Sole (black peppermint).
Also it is possible to write the species in capital letter when the species were named after persons. E.g.
Cinchona ledgeriana or Cinchona Ledgeriana. Thus the species of Cinchona named after Charles Ledger, who brought its seeds from Brazil.
The specific name (species) is usually chosen to indicate some characteristic of the plant for example the hemlock with the spotted stem
is named Conium maculatum (maculatus means spotted).
